Buy him a BURN-proof (or similar technology) CD-RW writer then it should be
fine 99% of the time. He may not be able to burn at 16X or 24X with the
system he has, but 8X should be fine. To be sure, find out the average data
transfer rate of his HD. For example 12X = 1800K/sec. In order to write at
that speed, your HD has to have higher transfer rate than that number.
BURN-proof can help if the HD is at borderline speed.
