Many older boards had a switch or jumper that needed to be changed for color
or monochrome.  I think they stopped that with the 386 generation and
switched to BIOS settings.  But some of the earlier 486's may have that
color/mono option.

So there are two things to look for.  A switch/jumper or a BIOS setting.
