I play Age of Empires I and II;Rogue Spear on an HP with a 810 chipset with
onboard [8meg ram]video.  Works just fine even over the internet.  I think
that some of these video cards are overrated as I bought an ATI Expert 128
for my son and my computer still looks better.

There are big difference, if you want to play games, onboard video is never
a solution. Most onboard video share main memory which is much slower than
having memory its own. Even those don't share main memory, the onboard video
chip never catch up to date.

However, onboard video is good for normal office work, as you will hardly
notice the difference without 3D involved while you enjoy the money saving.

Please also keep in mind that some mobo with onboard video don't have AGP
slot or don't support other video card other than the onboard one, you will
have very limited upgrade capability or even no way to upgrade video with
those mobo.

8Mb video memory it enough if you don't ask for games.
