I don't have a clear enough picture of the problem systems to tell you why
SFS quit being sufficient in that environment.  All I can say is that I
routinely turn off SFS because the simplicity is too limiting on what you
can do.  For example, with SFS enabled, you don't have any GUI access to
change file ACLs (except in safe mode), and you don't have any ability to
control network access on a per-user basis.

That was it. After unchecking Enable Simple File Sharing, it all worked the
way it was supposed to. Thank you Carl!

And as a follow-up: 1) It worked fine before and I would imagine that Simple
File Sharing was enabled (the client wouldn't know how to even get there).
How could it, all of a sudden, make a difference? 2) Why would Simple File
Sharing make a difference in the first place? Why does it get in the way?

All the suggestions were wonderful and led me down paths that I hadn't
though of before.
