My new computer is an eMachines 366c (366-MHz) with
64-MB RAM running Windows 98 with IE 5 and OE 5. The system
randomly reboots itself anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 hours.
I suspected overheating of the CPU, so I removed the cover
and hung a 6-inch fan onto the open case. The increased
ventilation greatly improved system stability, but I still
have some rebooting.
Also, the 366-MHz computer processed data SLOWER than my
300-MHz backup computer, which showed up when processing
identical data witht the SETI program (Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence from the Space Science Labs,
University of Califiornia, Berkeley).
When I first connected the external fan, the 366-MHz
computer started running FASTER than the 300-MHz computer,
but has since slowed down again. Both computers have been
running continuously for the past five months, but my
300-MHz computer has run flawlessly throughout.
Does anyone know for sure if the above situation is a
sure sign of CPU deterioration? The eMachines company has
been avoiding a direct answer to my problem.
