The diagnostic SIW identifies the Ethernet controller as "PCI/VEN_14E4DEV" 
and the multimedia controller as "PCE/VEN_1106DEV".

Does that make any sense?  I couldn't find any drivers on the Asus site 
that corresponded to those identifications.

The VIA drivers wouldn't install.

If and when I get the computer back again, I'll check the other details you 
raise.
