Hi Edna:

PS/2 mice use a different signalling protocol than serial mice.
The mechanical adapters that are sometimes provided do not change
the protocol. Also, the adapters are not! all wired the same. Some
mice can support both serial and ps/2 protocols. Usually selected
by a  switch on the bottom or pressing one of the buttons during
boot up.
