Michele, you'll be courting disaster if you remove the CPU fan and power up.  Admittedly it's only a 500mhz processor but it'll get hot very quickly without cooling.

Obviously there must be a lower limit to the power level of processors that'll run 'naked' but I wouldn't like to experiment.

All I know is - I've seen a Celeron 1Ghz cook itself to death in 2 seconds - that was enough to put me off running ANY processor without a heat sink or fan.
