Michele, you'll be courting disaster if you remove the CPU fan and power up. Admittedly it's only a 500mhz processor but it'll get hot very quickly without cooling.

Obviously there must be a lower limit to the power level of processors that'll run 'naked' but I wouldn't like to experiment.

All I know is - I've seen a Celeron 1Ghz cook itself to death in 2 seconds - that was enough to put me off running ANY processor without a heat sink or fan.

Actually, no, I haven't tried that, I didn't think of it, I've been using
the same cpu fan everytime, thanks for that suggestion.
I want to ask this before I try it as I'm a bit wary, so here goes: would it
be too risky to take the cpu fan off and see if the system fires up?
Obviously, I wouldn't leave it running for long, just long enough to see if
  it's worth me buying another fan? It's a slot1 500mhz p3 cpu.
As far as I'm aware, a slot 1 cpu can run for at least a few seconds without
being fried, but I may be wrong. I'm told a celeron wouldn't be quite so
  'hard-waring'.
I won't try this until someone tells me either yes or no.
  TIA
