Thanks David,
What you said comes down to this:
I have to ask the vendor, or wait to see if anyone has found
something "easy"... (And of course, "easy" means less or not secure...)

The "real answer" to my question is that there is no "good" answer...
(At least not one that I might "like"...)

More ramblings follow:
There were several "other" reasons I asked...
YEARS AGO, QuickBooks used to store the password right next
to the company name, (both in plain text), so all you needed was
one to find the other, or know exactly where to look... Also a good
text editor that would open BIG files, or one that would open at least
"some of it" and then could be stopped.
(A "streaming" text editor with a stop button? I had one...)

Everyone forgets a password if enough time elapses and if it is
never used... Opening up, browsing, or "mounting" old image files
is not my favorite passtime. But I know from experience that I have
used other ways to store stuff that was "slightly" private and lost it.
I can't open old files stored on some password protected ZIP
disks (the Iomega kind) since they claim all you can do is re-format
the disk... I'm sure others have lost data in similar ways...

Image files are, by design, meant to be "portable" so the password
is stored inside it "somehow", or is the "key"...

Like most computer users, I want ease of use, good security, but
protection from myself from my own stupidity and mistakes...
They really have their work cut out for themselves at the software
companies <grin>...

The "real answer" to my question is that there is no "good" answer...
