Have you verified that the mechanical switch that senses the presence of
the paper actually works correctly?  This is a likely cause of this
problem - and easy to check if there is an "out of paper" indicator.
(Or you could pull the plug, open the case, and use an ohmmeter to
check the resistance across the contacts of the switch "with" and
"without" paper.)

Would you say that you are "experienced" working around MOVING, powered
equipment, and can do so safely?

Do you have any test equipment? (VOM? Oscilloscope? Soldering tools?
Breakout Box?)

Do you have any diagnostics software suitable for testing printers?
