An interesting thought -- I'll check that the BIOS shows a sensible
set of information for the "first drive". Usually it starts to boot
okay, then either reports that it can't find a file (often "ndis.sys",
but sometimes other .sys files) and then bluescreens. On reboot, it
says Windows failed to boot, but either "Reboot normally" or "Boot to
last known good configuration" will work....

It sounds like a path issue. When you cloned the drive did you then
go into the BIOS, and let it know what the new boot drive was? My
BIOS didn't find my SSD after I did a firmware upgrade.
