I was able to get the correct values for X. The difficulty was in finding a monitor that would match the display of the laptop. The verticle sync freq. was critcal and had to be selected as extended SVGA.
Now X is up and running and Gnome looks great in 16 bit color and is fast with a 475 kHz processor.
