I actually use the "crossover cable effect" against my network...

I Have a DSL modem that feeds a BroadBand Router/Switch.
I "uplink" out of the Switch into a hub.
When I want a certain segment of the network to be "LOCKED"
off the Internet in a "hardware way" (which is the best way IMHO,
other than having the computer off), I hit the uplink switch on the
HUB to switch the port to "reverse cable" mode...
That breals the "hub link" and forces me off line...

If I had fancy modern stuff, that would not be possible...
Anyone hearing a story like this that has only worked with the newer
stuff would think I was making it up, or never realize that was possible...
