Thanks everyone for the help!  I pulled a big old Gateway CRT out of the 
storage shed, and lo and behold:  I have _far_ more resolution settings 
than I had even with the old eMachines monitor!  How weird is that? 

Anyhow, this will give me time to get to Lancaster and exchange that 
wide-screen for its value against a better one.  It quit working 
altogether; the on/off switch wasn't responding correctly right from the 
get-go, so I plugged it into the APC and I think its fuse blew!
