I would advise against a filter, as even a clean filter will dramatically
reduce the air-flow. A relatively small amount of dust will plug most
fan-sized filters all too quickly - leading to SEVERE overheating.

I would only suggest a filter if it was necessary to exclude conductive
dust such as powdered metal - and then I would suggest a stronger fan sized
to give MORE air-flow with a large area (usually pleated like a car
air-filter).

Much of the dust sucked into a system will pass through it, and what settles
inside it will do less harm spread thinly over the components than if it was
blocking the airflow. Periodically blow most of it out of the system with a
blast of clean air. If you use the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner, make sure
that ALL the dirt is out of the hose, first.
