Something similar happened to me.  In my case it was a conflict with
Alcohol 120% (cd burning software) and the nVidia chipset drivers for
the nForce2 chipset on the motherboard.  Reverting to the Microsoft
version of the nForce driver solved my problem (as would uninstalling
Alcohol)
