Most laptops are proprietary in design and architecture.  It is highly unlikely that any non-Compaq drive will fit. I am assuming the A drive is internal on this machine.  If it is an external plug-in peripheral it would not be proprietary.  If it is proprietary they can charge whatever they want.  Like have you ever broken a taillight, turn signal light, or headlight on your car?  Car manufacturers and dealers charge nearly $100 for a plastic taillight housing made in some third world country for pennies.  They all do that, it's called "let's stick the consumer".
