If all else fails, try deleting all the existing network connections.  Then delete/remove the wireless modem from the hardware.  Reboot the laptop.  It should find 'new hardware' and add it without a problem.  Then try to search for the wireless network and attempt to connect again.
WEP means wireless encryption privacy, WPA means wi-fi protected access, WPA2 is 2nd generation.  All are techniques to make it harder to intercept your wireless data.
