Turn down the volume, switch off, or disconnect the speakers before recording
to avoid "feedback" like the squeals and whistles you get if you turn up
the volume on a public address system.  The grating sound is the
amplified sound of the microphone scraping across the desk.  Try not to
move it.    :-)
