Hard disk (portable) caddies appear to offer an easy way to extend a machine's storage capacity. They also seem to add security by allowing the disks to be locked away when not in use.

Is there a downside? Are current disks (like those made by Western Digital or IBM) robust enough to withstand the shock that must occur when the disk is engaged in the caddy?
