Michael,

You need to get your modem onto COMM1.

First move your mouse to COMM 2.
Second, delete your current modem in the Device Manager
     (RIGHT-click MY COMPUTER -- PROPERTIES)
Finally, add the modem back in
(START--SETTINGS--CONTROL PANEL -- ADD NEW HARDWARE)
*** BUT do not let Windows "find it". Install it manually.

Even after doing that, you may have to open the box and manually
set a jumper to force the modem to COMM1. and then start all over.

This should solve MOST of your problems. Dropping the connection
may be a problem with the TelCo.
