A couple of additional comments regarding a backup HD.

1. It is best to use two external drives for backup, alternating devices.
That way, if a hard disk fails during the backup, then you still have a good
backup on your other external drive.

2. Consider using encryption on your backup, as well as your main drive. If
your drive fails and it is still under warranty, do you really want to send
the drive with your data on it to the manufacturer? I have hears stories
where refurbished drives were found to have other people's data still on
them. I have started using TrueCrypt with very little impact on my
convenience and speed.

I need to get an ext. HD for back up. Looking at a 2.5" model that gets it's
power from the USB. Primary use is auto back up of desktop. Also want to
manually back up wife's desktop and a laptop. I assume I can auto back up my
desktop AND create separate folders to manually back up 2 other computers.
