There "are" some problem programs and/or installation combinations
that will cause drives to be "gone", but I think that is not what you are
saying. Yours come and go...

It is almost sounding like a cheap MB socket and/or a faulty/cracked
solder joint on the socket/board...  This is not something a "tinkerer" can
fool with.  (And it might cost an arm and a leg to get it looked at and
repaired professionally.)
