hi, list. jim wishner in minnesota. wonder if someone can help me with a problem i've run into while setting up a small home computer network. i have two computers tied into a cable modem provided by "media one." one computer, an older one running windows 95 with 48 megs of ram, works fine, and connects at around 650 kbps. the second computer, running win 98 with 128 megs of ram, only achieves a slightly better than dial-up connection (57 kpbs or 7kbytes/second). in trouble shooting, i first eliminated the "hub" and plugged the slow computer directly into the cable modem. same results. i replaced the connecting cable. same results. i replaced the network card (smc 10/100mbps fast ethernet pci card). still slow. i have verified all the network settings during several sessions with media one. they are stumped. i called smc, and they say there may be an issue with the motherboard. that goes beyond my area of expertise. the board is an asus p5a super7. is there any setting on the board, or change in the bios, that would prevent the computer from establishing a connection faster than around 57 kbps? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

regards,

jim wishner
