Greetings Al and list--

When installing Windows XP (like Windows NT products before it), it may be necessary to press F6 at the point in the installation of XP where it asks if there are any storage device drivers that need to be installed. (I'm not sure of the exact wording, but it is while the installation is still in the "blue screen" mode.) Sometimes XP "sees" motherboard SATA hardware as a SCSI system, and the appropriate drivers from the disk included with the motherboard need to be made available. As for *programs* (like the ASUS system monitor software), they should be installed after the OS.
