Can you be more specific about what you're trying to do?
Anything that is playing on the computer is already "recorded". If 
you're playing a CD or DVD, for instance, you may need to merely copy 
the file in question.
There is a lot of free software and other techniques involved, so 
provide as much detail as you can.
