Hello everyone, I really don’t know if this is a software or a hardware
problem . I received a P III “hand me down” from a friend running Win 98. The computer was running ok and the monitor (a 19” ViewSonic) was in good working order also. However, the hard drive was completely full and things were running very slow. I formatted the hard drive (a first for me) and
installed a clean copy of 98. When it booted up for the first time the
monitor only had 16 colors instead of 256. I went into the control panel / display / and the / settings / tab and found that this was a default setting with no other options. The slide bar at the bottom of this tab was grayed out and there was no reaction when trying to reset it. I had the computer scan for a monitor driver and it revealed that the existing driver was ok. I
tried working the settings on the monitor itself with no change. Then I
hooked up a new 17” Sony Trinitron E240 monitor (one that was on a different computer and working fine with 256 colors) and repeated all the above steps and the results were still the same. Only 16 colors. Can anyone help solve this perplexing problem?

Many thanks............Donald DeWitt
