My first thought is the common-sense one, of course, no insult intended,
but have you tried connecting the camera into both ports, rebooting on each
attempt?

Also, is the "please connect camera/turn on.." when you attempt to run
the actual capture software? Possibly there is a setup/config prog
that must be run as the software is not always proprietary to the
device, but rather generic, compatible with a whole line of
cameras(diff makes and models)
