Dave,
        I would suggest that you visit the Western Digital website. They
have a new version of EZ drive (now version 9) that will lead you
through this entire process. It creates a bootable floppy that detects
what your bios will support, helps you partition and format the drive,
and if you were to be replacing a drive it will copy the files for you.
I just used it to install a WD 6.4 GB drive in a friends machine and it
went perfect. His bios did not do lba and it even installed the drive
overlay for him. The new version of EZ drive is easily removable if case
your bios does get updated and the drive overlay is not needed anymore.
The file is only 494 kb so it is no sweat to download even on a slow
connection. Have a formated floppy ready though.
        Also the site has lots of information in acrobat format
documents that address all your questions.

I have the original win95 and will be adding a 6.4 gb western digital
hard drive.  I have never done this before so I'm sorry if these
questions are too basic.

My bios supports lba.  I would like detailed information on how to
partition the new hd using fdisk.

Do I add the new hd and disconnect the old drive and then boot with the
diskette?

What choices do I make at the menu?

When do I set the primary partition as active and transfer the boot
files?

I was thinking of making my Primary partition around 2 GB which would
have most of the major programs (win95, office, netscape, quicken etc)
and making the logical drives around 1GB to hold the data files.  What
is recommended?

After the hd is partitioned do I have to format the Primary partition
and all the logical drives separately by going through letters C, D, E,
F, G, etc using the command
FORMAT ?: /s?

Now, I'm ready to clone the system?

My understanding is that this is how the drive letter assignments will
be made -
Drive C will be the primary partition on the new hd; Drive D will be the
primary partition on the old drive; Drive E - ? will be the logical
drives on the new hd?
Is this correct?

To clone the system, I turn off the PC, reinstall the OLD drive as the
boot disk.  Enter win95 and go to a DOS prompt (not restart in DOS
mode), and enter the command:

         xcopy  c:\*.*   d:\   /r /i /c /h /k /e /y

Out of curiosity.  What do the switches mean?

Now what do I do to finish this?
