I have a Linksys 4-port USB hub from which I run 4 USB peripherals without using the AC adapter.  On my second USB port (on the computer) I run a Belkin 4-port mini hub w/o the adapter.  On it I run 3 printers and my scanner.  Been working fine for almost 2 years.
