PCBUILD includes support for OS, so this is the correct forum for your
post. My vote would be for XP Pro, which is what I am running on my own
system at home. It seems to be the best that Microsoft has offered so
far, except that NT 3.51 was far more stable. The problem with NT 3.51,
however, is that it will not run the newer software. Please note that
while I say that XP is among the best that MS has done so far, I still
often find myself seriously considering switching to Linux!

I am an instructor at a community college. Microsoft offers a
subscription service to educational institutions that gives them the
right to distribute OS and development software to students, faculty,
and staff within the member department. Cost is only around $800 per
year. If your school subscribes to the MSDN Academic Alliance, then you
are in good shape. Otherwise, educational pricing for Microsoft OS
products is not different from discounts I have seen to the general
public.

I realize this is probably a software question but thought I'd pose it
here first since it is part of hardware project.

Now I need some advice on the OS - I'm thinking XP but should I use
Home or
Pro? This computer will eventually be networked with one or two others
in
my house. Also is there a source for educational discounts on software?
I teach at a college and can pass muster as an educational professional.
