I have had a similar problem with a 486 and I am not really sure what was
causing it but I think is was one of the SIMMS. The problem was
intermittent, lasted for years, and it only happened when the PC was cold.
Once the boards heated up it worked OK. But for the last year it just about
always happened when I first powered on. I recently upgraded the Simms from
4 mixed  4 meg FPM SIMMS to 4matched FPM Kingston 16 meg SIMMS and the
problem went away.
