After you disconnected the data cable to the A drive, did you change the
BIOS settings to indicate that there is no A drive? Then "my computer"
should not indicate an A drive.

However, that does not address the problem. Apparently ME, the motherboard
BIOS, or the manner that the replacement HD acts as a 127MB drive rather
than a 160MB drive is causing the problem. I would first double check the
setup of the replacement HD with the manufacturers directions to limit it to
127MB. Then I would check for a BIOS upgrade, if any. Then I would check
through Microsoft to see if the computer could handle an upgrade of the OS
to Windows XP. And finally, I would consider if the desired upgrade was
worth the effort and $ in light of the cost of a new computer.

  I just installed a new Western Digital hard drive and now my A drive
doesn't work. When I go to MY COMPUTER and click on A the computer freezes
up. I unplugged the ribbon cable going to the mother board and it still
freezes up. I'm running Windows ME on a HP computer. The computer originally
had a 60 MB drive but the new one is 160 MB (only 127MB recognized). I
reinstalled Windows but the same thing happens. Any suggestions?
