Eric,

You mention that you checked the volume control in 'sounds and multimedia'.
Have you also checked the volume control in Programs > Accessories >
Entertainment > Volume Control?  You have a separate control over muting and
volume on the Line In there.  There is also a Mute All check box to
validate.  Do you perhaps have some other 3rd party mixer installed where
the Line In may be muted or turned down?
