Adam:
AMD recommends that you use a thermal pad rather than a thermal paste or
grease with Athlon XP's. They explain why in this document:

Incidentally, AMD provides a number of other good technical documents for home
builders at their website (www.amd.com/us-en/). Well worth a visit.
