I am using the router solution that has already been suggested to you and
it works very well. The LinkSys unit that I use is the BEFSR41 router which
is technically a Router and Switch combined. It does indeed list for $60 at
Amazon ($50 after rebate) but was $200 when I bought mine. It has been
around for quite a while and may be the most common. Although other brands
and models may work just as well, there is a lot to be said for staying
"mainstream". To connect it, run an ordinary network cable from your cable
modem to the router input. From the router there are 4 outputs for network
cables which go to a maximum of 4 computers. Most new cable modems have
both USB and network cable output. I've used both and find the network
cables more reliable. I have used the router with two different cable
companies and found them helpful in the final configuration and activation.
There is no extra charge for the additional connections with Adelphia or Cox.

Your shopping list might look like this: (Probably under $75)
1. Router
2. Cable from Router to Laptop
3. Network PCMCIA card (if laptop doesn't already have a network input)
