Bob,

Your Menu path for XP:
Right Mouse>My Computer>Properties>  -->Hardware -->Device Manager
-->Ports (Com & LPT)
 Right Mouse>->Communications Port (Com 5) Right Mouse>"Properties"
  Port Settings->"Advanced" "COM Port Number"(Select Port Number you
need)
   OK->OK->Exit->Exit

I hope that makes sense to you. Good luck!

It's XP Pro. I'll be at that computer tomorrow and give these a try. I
found the suggested path through the menus on my home desktop so I think
I know what to do. I'll get back to the list if that turns out not to
correct:^)

Bob,

You didn't mention the OS so I can't be too specific but hopefully will
still help. You need to get into the Device Manager, usually that's done
thru the computer proerties. Once there select Ports (Com & LPT) and
then the Com port Properties. At some point you will have drilled down
far enough to see the individual ports. Select 5 or 6, then Properties,
Port Settings, and then Advanced. Keep drilling until you see a pull
down selection box that allows you to select Com Port Number. This
selection should allow you to change the port number to an unused but
port number within the desired range.

If you can't find it, send along the OS type and I will try to be more
specific.

Subject: [PCBUILD] COM port problem

I'm using a desktop that has 1 serial port on the MB. I needed an
additional serial port so I put in a card with 2 ports. That worked
fine UNTIL I moved the card so that I could put in a wireless card. Now
when I look in the device manager it thinks the additional COM ports are
COM5 and COM6. The software I'm using on the serial ports only
recognizes COM1 thru 4.  How can I redefine COM 5 & 6 to 3 &4?
