I am slowly replacing components. Most imminent
is a decent graphics adapter. Right now I have
got an ATI Radeon 7000 with 32MB of RAM. It seems
sluggish and sometimes images don’t get
displayed. I think I am ready to move on. I have
done well with both nVidia & ATI adapters, in the
past. Apparently ISA and PCI graphic cards are
out, AGP is on its way out, and I have no idea
what is a PCI Express or a Crossfire. The
on-board video accelerator is puny. Here is my
MB:

I am not much of a gamester anymore, so most of
my applications revolve around more mundane uses.
Latest fun is with family-related video
production. Nothing fancy, mind you. Some
conversion of mpegs or VHS analog to DVD Video,
slide shows… like that. I block most of the Flash
and animations on the Web, so that doesn’t matter
that much to me. Still, even with the meager
video requirements I have, I know I could stand a
bit more video juice. When I get to 40 or so
slides, a couple of video clips, things start creaking.

What would be a decent card that would serve me
well for a couple of years? I am looking at a PNY
Verto GeForce 6200 or the ATI Radeon 9600 XT,
both of which I can get for around $70, for the
256MB version. The AGP slot on the MoBo supports 1.5V 4x/8x AGP.

Any thoughts, experiences, suggestions?

TIA

Andrew
