If you use Photoshop for example, you'll need five times as much memory as
the size of your graphic. If you don't have that much RAM your computer will
start to use the harddisk instead, which is much slower. A scanned picture
with a resolution of 600x600 dpi comes very easy to a size of 50 MBytes for
which you'll need 250 MBytes RAM to work with it.
For this special case only one statement is true: The more RAM the better!!
