Installed speedstream 2604 router w/ aol broadband and
toshiba pcx2200 cable modem. Hooked up 4 identical ibm
pII-266's, all working fine w/ aol v 8.0 and win98se. Tried
to switch 1 pc to an hp pII-266, also with aol 8.0 and
win98se, but can't get past router/modem. I can ping other
pc's connected to router and the HP from another connected
pc, router software shows connected as 192.168.254.7, others
are ...254.2, ...254.3 or...254.4. Tried releasing and
renewing ip from pc, dropping all connections from router,
rebooting modem and router. Went thru AOL help (2x),
Speedstream help (3x), Time Warner (2x). All settings appear
correct to all of them.
Reinstalled tcp/ip, tried 2 used nics, currently have a new
nic installed. Downgraded IE to version 5. AOL version 8
(also reinstalled 2x) just won't recognize connection and I
can't ping past the router or modem. Also, router does not
recognize http://192.168.254.254 which is supposed to launch
setup wizard resident on router. (works from other connected
pc's).
I also connected directly to the cable modem, same results -
no access to isp, modem does not recognize setup wizard
access via http from IE5.
Suspect problem with dhcp, a friend said defaults might be
1-4, and 7 isn't in that range, but he doesn't know where to
go to fix it. (What happened to 5 & 6?).
Any ideas on what else to try or how to change dhcp range?
Problem with IE5? Have not yet reinstalled this, had v 6
and downgraded to 5...
