I recently upgraded my system to a Celeron 400MHz CPU on an ABIT BX6 mainboard. The new configuration refused to boot up with my old Acer ISA modem installed, so I purchased a Motorola SM56 PCI modem, thinking it was an easy way to remedy the problem.

The new modem works, except that when the modem is run, the mouse cursor disappears. The mouse is still active, I just can't see what it is pointing at. If I get the modem to perform another function sometimes my mouse cursor will reappear, but only as long as I am using the modem and then the system usually crashes.

The modem has set itself up on COM4. I can switch to COM3 (which doesn't help), but not to COM1 or 2 which are currently unused. When I check the System Properties there is no mention of COM ports 3 or 4. The mouse is connected through a PS/2 port. The mo
dem is using IRQ 11, and the mouse is on IRQ 12. No device conflicts show up on the System Properties report.

I’ve checked Motorola’s help files and online FAQ, which make no mention of this type of problem.

So, is there a solution to this or should I take the modem back and get a better one?
