A couple weeks ago I reformatted my computer and reinstalled my OS (win98se) and hardware drivers like normal. I also updated IE to 6.0 and windows installer to 2.0. After that I installed my normal most used programs such as office 2000, cute ftp, some cd burning software, etc. Now my problem that I am encountering is this. Whenever I download any large files over ftp (I've tried multiple ftp clients) or when I am burning cd's it seems like I have this massive memory leakage (I have 512, usually 400 free at least and when I'm done 0) and my CPU spikes from normal usage to 100% seemingly on a cycle of about every 3-5 seconds. I would like to note that I have no other programs running when I am using this stuff, and am not using any new hardware or programs since my previous reformat just before christmas. I was wondering what sort of things could be causing this, and if any of you might be able to shed some light on this.

Computer Specs: (bare with me my system is a few years old now)

AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz
Asus A7A266 MotherBoard
Segate Baracuda III 20 GB HDD
2x256 DDR 2700 RAM
Soundblaster Live 5.1 Soundcard
Radeon 7500 VideoCard
3Com EtherLink 10/100 NIC (3C905C-TX)
LiteOn DVD-ROM
LiteOn 12x10x32 Burn Proof CDRW

Thanks,
Curt
