Bruce,

Just a thought, is the cable marked at the connectors as primary/master and secondary/slave? Some older cables were not 'cable select' and rely on the device to be set to master or slave, instead of cable select.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Compaq Evo D510 CMT does not recognize 2nd hard drive.

I pulled a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7

that had been the primary drive on an eMachines T3990.and set it up as a slave on the Compaq so I can access data. Jumper on Seagate is set to cable select and attached it to middle, grey connector.

Upon boot up, Windows (XP Pro) scanned

disk, found lots of bad sectors, or whatever, and required reboot upon completion.

Tried to open what is now identified as E drive, got message “Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.” Oh, and they are sorry for the inconvenience. Clicking on Debug and Dr Watson also encountered a problem. And they are sorry for the inconvenience.

Subsequent attempt got message disk is not formatted, and asking if I want to format it. Well, if I could format it without losing data, I would, but I don't think that's an option, is it?

As it turns out, just clicking on My Computer gets an error message, although not right away.

I have tried Seagate Disc Wizard and it shows the drive as a primary slave. (Compaq's drive is showing up as primary master.) If I try to add new disk, it wants to delete partitions (There is one where operating system is.) However, it says the operation is only possible if destination had disc is empty. Again, I want to access the data on this drive, not eliminate it.

So, how do I get Compaq to recognize the slave drive so I can access data?

Thanks!

Bruce
