  Do I correctly understand that you are not using the built-in USB port(s),
but instead are using an add-on card to provide a port for the scanner?

  If this is the case, I think you may need to check that the built-in ports
are disabled in the CMOS setup.  They may be conflicting with the add-on card.

  You also haven't specified your OS.  I've heard that the USB update to
Win95 was not very stable, and that Win98 handles this much better.  Could
that be the issue?
