Hi,

Generally, you are supposed to switch the power off to all equipment before unplugging, plugging in, any connection for audio.

I am a musician and have been, unplugging, plugging in, my audio equipment for years with the power on, without any problems. But I wouldn't want you to follow my bad habits!!
