95 and 98 used a very insecure encryption method (inherited from even
older products...) to send user names and passwords across the network to
access shared resources. Windows 2000 introduced a new, more secure method -
- and the option to enable or disable the old method.
Disabling the old method -- possibly the default setting -- renders it
incompatible with systems that use only the older method.
Test: Can the XP and 2000 machines share with each other? If so, then
probably the old encryption is enabled on XP but disabled on 2000. (If not,
then you're encountering a different issue.)
