At the moment, it's hard to see a connection between loading a screen saver
and disabling a CD.

Tell me this:

When you place the CD in your drive, does the drive ever quiet down? I mean,
does the light ever stop blinking? Do you hear the drive spin up?

Can you get on the the Internet? You certainly can download the drivers from
the web.

You have to weigh the frustration against the cost of a box from a manuf.
You don't have to build a "better box" _or_ buy from Dell or Gateway. Check
Pricewatch.com for links to smaller builders that will take more customized
orders.
