I haven't tried with early versions, but according to my Partition Magic
documentation, the FAT 32 format is compatible with DOS version 5.0 and
higher.  And on my Win95 and Win98 machines, booting to DOS (or a DOS
window) displays the 8.3 filenames just fine.
