Joseph,

Are you absolutely sure that you have the proper driver installed?  I've
never heard of an HP printer being detected as an NEC printer.  Unless one
company is contracting out their design.  The wrong driver would definitely
cause the 'odd' print that you are seeing.  I'd go right to hp's site and
download their latest driver for that printer.  Extract the file and run the
setup program.  See if it works then.  Also is your cable the IEEE 1284
standard?
