Well in general standardization is a good thing that helps to keep costs
down.. It also allows for a common connection for similar devices and makes
extension cables interchangeable. This concept is not unique. A RCA cable
can be used for an audio connection on your stereo receiver and a video
connection on your VCR and patch cords for a tape recorder as well as
speaker cables and a few other devices. Many different applications for the
same type of cabling is also true for phone jacks and coaxial connections.
